What Makes the English so Smart?!

Due to constant reminders of a damaged economy, violence in the media, in the streets or at home, political, social and educational controversy, stress is a major factor in our deteriorating health.

Reducing stress and its damaging effects on our bodies is important. Stress causes the inappropriate release of adrenaline which in turn causes the heart to beat faster and harder, shunts blood to certain organs and muscles at the expense of other organs, and changes hormones, specifically cortisol, a hormone that is important in fat, sugar and protein metabolism.

Do you ever wonder, “What am I doing this for? What is it going to get me?”

Take a moment now to review your day up to this moment. Ask yourself a few questions:

1. Have I taken time to consciously breathe? Oxygen and thus breathing fully is important for clarity of mind and focus. It also helps energize our bodies through oxygen’s role in metabolism and numerous biochemical processes.

2. How do I feel right now? Am I uptight, depressed, sleepy, bored or overwhelmed? All these issues can be addressed through a few simple breathing exercises as well as taking a moment to consciously become aware of your surroundings.

3. Am I accomplishing what I need to? If so, give yourself a reward. If not, perhaps you need a moment to recharge, focus and even touch on inspiration.

Anxiety, stress, fear, productivity, pain, both physical and mental, self-esteem, confidence, weight reduction, overall balance in life and wellness are all issues that can be addressed through the simple habit of taking a moment to center, breathe and appreciate our surroundings. We often forget to be good to ourselves.

We become more useful to others when we take care of ourself. Success relies on our ability to renew our energy in tough situations, to focus and find inspiration.

Start with establishing a time and comfortable place each day to practice being aware and appreciative. True meditation can be difficult, and there are easier methods with which to start. Mindfulness exercises are easier. Here’s a simple suggestion to start:

The act of having a cup of tea each day is an age-old practice associated with the English. What better habit than a cup of tea when brewing it can be a process of unfolding beauty?!

Tea flower tea is made from tea balls of green or white tea leaves sewn around flowers. The blossoms enhance the health benefits of the tea and their aroma is therapeutic. The various types of flowers are antioxidant rich and have special qualities that compliment those of the tea leaves.

The antioxidants in green and white tea attach to and neutralize free radicals in our bodies. Free radicals are responsible for many of our acute and chronic illnesses, from cancer to skin and organ health.

Eastern and early western medicine recognize the benefits of flowers in treating and preventing illness. Together, the tea is antioxidant rich, provides the beneficial qualities of aromatherapy while offering a visual and sensory catalyst for mindfullness.

We enjoy a form of easy meditation by consciously engaging all of our senses. Quiet your mind by focusing on your senses one at a time, sight, smell, feel, sound and taste, and appreciate the moment. Developing an appreciation for the present is an important part of mindful living.
